Surgical Programs in Guyana

T

he Surgical mission of HERO is a part of HERO's overall goal of providing comprehensive health care to the communities in need in Guyana primarily, but to the entire Caribbean. HERO as an organization has been in existence since 2000, our surgical arm however came to life in 2004. During our medical outreach following the severe floods of that year, we became aware of a pressing deficit in surgical care that had resulted in many patients waiting extended periods for elective surgical procedures, some of them with adverse outcomes. At the same time, the plight of two children, one suffering from a Facial Tumor and the second a condition called Clubfoot, both painful but treatable conditions was brought to our attention. On our return, we immediately began working towards seeking help to relieve the pain of these children. While we were able to provide temporary relief to the pain and suffering of one of these children, the process lead to the realization that the surgical needs of the people could not be effectively met one person at a time.

HERO's surgical mission is to complement the care delivered by our medical colleagues so as to provide complete care to those in need in Guyana and the Caribbean. Our goal is to help those in need on an individual basis, as well as to advance the quality of surgical care through education and provision of resources to the providers at the forefront of the health care delivery process. To these ends we recently completed the second leg of Operation Kidcare, a project aimed at providing surgical care to children with lower extremity deformities. At the same time, we continue to work with the staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital to aide in the process of Residency Training development.

Persons interested in joining our team of Surgeons, Anesthesiologist, OR nurses and technicians can contact us through our web site. All surgical specialists are welcome to join in helping us to achieve our goals.
