...a little can benefit many...

HERO is able to maintain the independence that allows us to provide urgent medical care to hundreds of people in the Caribbean each year.

On behalf of the HERO's directors and volunteers, more importantly, the people whom we assist, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you for your belief in our humanitarian work and your ongoing support in making it a reality.

H

ealth and Educational Relief Organization, Inc was established in 2000. From its inception HERO's mission has been to deliver health care to populations in need. Healthcare disparities, a common lexicon among Public Health Officials in the USA, must be redefined within the context of healthcare delivery in developing countries. As such, "underserved" in a developing country may quite easily be used to describe an entire country's population, as opposed to specific socioeconomic groups, as in the USA and other developed countries.

HERO's Medical Program consists of teams of physicians, physicians extenders, nurses, medical assistants ,students( both medical and undergraduate) and other professionals. Each team is usually assigned to a specific region for the duration of the medical outreach tour. Tours usually take place in the months of March and August of each year. The duration of a medical tour is from five to seven days.

In an attempt to reach the sections of the population least likely to have access to care, medical stations are set up deep within the villages. A wide range of medical conditions are encountered, from the mundane to the exotic. A good rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected. This essentially guarantees a rich clinical and cultural experience that usually has a profound impact on all participants. While on tour medical personnel work closely with local providers to ensure continuity of care. All medical services, including medications, are provided at no cost to the patients.
